We’re pleased to announce that starting today, you’ll see a revamped comments section at the bottom of each Techcitement article. Disqus, the commenting service we use, began previewing on a broad scale its newest iteration nearly a month ago. After watching the improvements for a few weeks, we feel it’s now stable enough to roll it out on our site. So, this morning, we went live with Disqus 2012. There are significant cosmetic changes, ones that we feel will enhance your reading and commenting experience and hopefully get to know your fellow readers better, along with some behind-the-scenes changes that will help us more easily manage the conversation.
Changes are being rolled out by the Disqus team regularly, including some tweaks just last night with more promised in the coming days. But again, we feel that this new system is more than ready for prime time. You can follow the release changes as they happen on this page.
The Disqus team released this video to announce the release of Disqus 2012.
Disqus 2012 is still a work in progress, even if it is live. The mute button mentioned in the video and the Discovery tab haven’t made it to the live version, and some links in the personalized My Disqus section don’t work properly yet, but many more improvements have gone live.
A few major changes to note:
- One unannounced change we noticed is the removal of Yahoo and OpenID sign-in options. Commenters now seem limited to Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, and a Disqus account. To get the most out of Disqus, we suggest using the latter.
- Hover over a commenter’s picture for the Follow option and you’ll be able to see their latest comments on Techcitement and around the web from your personalized My Disqus section.
- Hover over the Share link on each comment to share it with your friends on Twitter, Facebook, or anywhere else by grabbing the link.
- You can vote a comment up or down, which changes how everyone will see the thread. Comments that are voted up by the community rise to the top when you filter “Best” first. When the community votes a comment down, it’s hidden to save everyone from having to read troll comments. Of course, you can still flag a comment as inappropriate for a moderator to step in.
- You can even hide a comment or comment thread when you’re done with it. That’ll be a big help on active discussion threads.
Play around in the comments section of this post to get a feel for the new Disqus. Put it through its paces, and if you find a bug, click on the feedback link above the comment box to share your experience with Disqus.
What do you think of the new Disqus 2012?
Thanks for information
What I am interested in is a comparison with Livefyre on impact on website loading speed. The older version was slower than Livefyre…
That’s true
The removal of OpenID is a disappointment. I have regular commentators on my blog that only use openID and they’re not interested in using one of the other options. I shouldn’t have to choose between using the new features or keeping people who are adding value to the discussion.
…the removal of … OpenID
sign-in options…
This is a mistake IMHO that will prevent users form migrating to the new version.
or maybe not — i’m finding no discussion of this anywhere else. Maybe nobody much cares.
I hope they add it back in. I presume that sooner or later disqus 2012 will be the only version available and I’ll either have to accept the loss of the openID option or switch to a different commenting system.
the twitter, facebook and goole plus links are not working on thi new version
It’s disappointing that the Disqus seems to have removed the ability to share your comment on Twitter or Facebook as easily as the previous version. Now I have to sign in, make my comment, post the comment and then hit share to post it on Twitter or Facebook… I doubt many people will even use it now. Also, signing in doesn’t work on Chrome.
How do you hide moderators from the “top commenters” list?
I read that Disqus 2012 is in an iframe – does this mean that the SEO capability will now be lower?
I found this page based on search results from the comments

I was looking for “Share this thread on Google+” along with Facebook and Twitter. Too bad it’s not available. That would have made switching to Disqus 2012 a more urgent priority for me.

Disqus seems to have removed the ability to share our comment on Twitter or Facebook as easily as the previous version. Is it correct?

I am new to using Disqus, and it was nice to find a blog where I may post comments and test formatting without disturbing an ongoing disqussion. If this is not the right place for that then I apologize.
