Apple’s iMessage: A Solution in Search of a Problem?

iMessage

Apple recently announced iMessage: a messaging app/protocol that communicated between iDevices — and that’s it.
If this sounds familiar, think RIM’s Blackberry Messenger.

I confess to not “getting” BBM . The idea of a closed portal for communicating on a device that can text, e-mail, and instant message already just seems redundant. And yet, what do I know? BBM is constantly called a killer feature, with users staying on RIM just for BBM.

Now Apple is releasing their own solution — an iOS specific messaging protocol, working in the same app as your existing messaging choices.  So, soon your iPhone can text, IM, MMS, Facetime, and iMessage from one spot. Except, well, once you’re in there, why not use one of those solutions?

Again, this isn’t something I get, but it’s apparently something people want. Indeed, Slashgear reports that Google may even be following Apple and RIM’s lead and adding a closed protocol of their own (because GTalk doesn’t count, it seems).

Only time will tell if either of these solutions take off — although history suggests they will.
