Google Music Beta Adds Linux Support — Gets to Type “First!”

tux_headphones

Penguins may not be able to fly, but Tux has access to a cloud now. Google has added support for the Open Source crowd by adding support for Linux.

This may seem like a minor deal, but it’s pretty huge. There are a ton of different players competing for the cloud music segment, but this is (to my knowledge) the first one to treat Linux users as a market. You can snag a beta of Spotify for Linux, but it’s buggy as all get out and only works for the pay accounts.

While Linux may have a smaller market segment than Windows or MacOS, the key is that this is a market segment that until now has had no native cloud music support.

Throw in the fact that Google is adding ogg file support, thus meaning any sort of Google Music Mobile client can become an ogg player (that rarest of things) and I’m this close to installing Unbuntu on an old laptop to give it a spin.

Hat tip to AndroidCentral for breaking the story.
