This week, President Obama’s campaign staff opened a Pinterest account. So far, the eight boards up feature typical Pinterest fare,with a political twist: Obama-themed cupcakes, clothing, someone’s decorated fingernails. The “Pet Lovers for Obama” board, featuring adorable animals (another Pinterest must), may or may not be a dig at Mitt Romney, who strapped the family dog to the car roof (pet lovers – they’re not for people who do this).
Pinterest’s rapid growth makes it an attractive new venue for courting voters, and the focus on pretty pictures might be expected to keep political arguments to a minimum. Or not. Comments on some of the pins have already erupted into acrimony, complete with ad hominems and cries of “You don’t know me!”
Obama’s presence on the 80 percent female site is also meant to show that the President cares about women’s votes. But in case anyone still has doubts about the President’s with-itness, there’s also a campaign Spotify mix.
This isnt elementary school where he can bring cupcakes and be class president.
