CES Day Two Recap: Tablets News (Mostly)

Much like day one, day two  of CES was also jam-packed with announcements. Tablet and smartphone news continued to come in at a breakneck pace.

Intel, which has been teasing its line of mobile processors for quite a long time, is finally making the move to jump to the consumer market. The Lenovo K800 will be the first smartphone with one of Intel’s brand-spanking new processors, and it comes with a 4.5 inch 720p display. The K800 will be released as an Android device during Q2 in China, which means we probably won’t see it in the U.S. anytime soon.

On the other hand, Motorola and Intel have announced they’ll use Intel’s Medfield platform in 2012 for tablets and smartphones. What this means for Motorola’s relationship with Texas Instruments, used in most of its current lineup, remains to be seen.

During CES so far, the trend seems to be cheaper Android tablets running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). A lot of focus is also on the displays of these devices, whether they be Super AMOLED or higher resolution, like the 1920×1200 (WUXGA) panels on Asus’ and Acer’s latest tablets.

Announced for Verizon, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE was unveiled last year in its HSPA+ form, but LTE makes it even more enticing. Barely changing the svelte dimensions of the original, this compact tablet packs a gorgeous 1280×800 Super AMOLED Plus display sure to impress. While unfortunately still running Android 3.2, an Android 4.0 upgrade would be sweet.

While not intended for consumer use, necessarily, the OLPC XO 3.0 has a solar charging cover, hand crank, and can run  OLPC’s Sugar OS as well as Android. At a $100 price point, this tablet is perfect for developing countries.

Acer Iconia Tab A700 is the first tablet announced with a 1920×1200 WUXGA display, runs Android 4.0, and is powered by Nvidia’s soon to be omnipresent Tegra 3 processor. An HDMI port, 1080p 5 MP rear-facing camera, and 32GB storage round out Acer’s new tablet on the block.

Billed as the thinnest and lightest 10.1 inch Android tablet yet, the Toshiba Excite X10 simply isn’t that exciting. Still running Android 3.2, its 1280×800 display and dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor don’t make it the most revolutionary tablet.
