Smart Foam Furniture Assembles Itself

Those frustrating hours spent assembling a snorglesborg or jvarslk from Ikea may start coming to a close thanks to a Belgian designer and engineer who has been working on smart foam technology that unfolds itself into stylish furniture.

Referred to as Memories of the Future, Carl de Smet has created a type of self-building furniture for Noumenon Design that morphs into a pre-set form when heated to a specific temperature. Noumenon hopes to reveal full-sized models soon to have memory foam-created living room and bedroom sets, but de Smet is working with the simpler concept of a chair first. It might not be too far in the future when you can fill your house with affordable shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) creations, allowing you to throw away that drawer full of Allen keys.

Check out this BBC video (after a short unskippable ad) for an example of the designer at work and to see how the furniture expands. Now, if only the furniture was also 3D printable.
